Exploring embedded systems development. This is in support of a Community Education class entitled Embedded Systems: Take the Mystery out of Microcontrollers. It was held at the Santa Rosa Junior College in Fall 2014. Register here.
Course Description
An embedded system is a device containing a computer dedicated to a single purpose. In this class you will explore the elements of a weather station, a useful product and a perfect example of an embedded system.
Whether you are a budding product designer, student, maker or hobbyist, the ability to use microcontrollers is a useful skill. Through hands-on activities, this class will give you the confidence to tackle your product ideas.
Students must have an understanding of high school physics, general computer proficiency and experience using the Internet as a research tool. Are you able to write email, edit and save files, and use Google to surf the Web? If you have doubts, try the CLT test.
The class is a sequence of hands-on exercises.
You will learn to:
- Assess the required behavior of your weather station.
- Understand and evaluate the limitations of sensors: accuracy, precision and repeatability.
- Recognize engineering tradeoffs: speed versus battery life.
- Appreciate the ubiquity of microcontrollers in the modern world and the range of everyday devices which depend on them.
